A Shared European Agenda

1751959290401

Denmark has assumed the EU Presidency under the headline “A Stronger Europe in a Changing World.” This marks a pivotal moment to strengthen European security while accelerating the green transition in a way that supports economic resilience and industrial growth.

A stronger Europe also means becoming more energy self-sufficient and making better use of local resources. Electro Sustainable Aviation Fuel (eSAF) is a prime example – produced from renewable electricity, water, and CO₂, it contributes to both climate goals and energy independence.

Last week, Fjord PtX had the pleasure of welcoming representatives from SAS – Scandinavian Airlines, Copenhagen Airports, and Aalborg Airport to our facility in Aalborg, alongside our project partners Aalborg Forsyning and Nordværk. Together, we explored how Danish eSAF production can help decarbonize aviation, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and foster green industries and local development.

At Fjord PtX, eSAF production is deeply rooted in the North Jutland community:

  • CO₂ and water are sourced locally from Nordværk’s waste-to-energy plant and Aalborg Forsyning’s wastewater treatment facility.
  • Excess heat from production is returned to the district heating network.
  • Renewable electricity is drawn directly from the grid, strengthening the business case for further offshore wind expansion in the North Sea.

This integrated model supports both Denmark’s ambition for 100% green domestic aviation and the EU’s targets under the ReFuelEU initiative.

A sincere thank you to Niels Hemmingsen, Lars Wigelstorp Andersen, Sabrina Tekle Krarup Jensen, and Peter Wiboe Holm for your visit and commitment to making eSAF a reality. And thanks to Jesper Høstgaard-Jensen, Mathias Brassøe, Michael Bering, and Henrik Skov for insightful discussions and tours – it was a pleasure to hear how Fjord PtX fits into your decarbonization strategies and the broader impact on Aalborg and the North Jutland region.
